Comfort

Individuals experience therapy sessions in both group and individual settings. It is vital to recovery, especially in group therapy sessions, for individuals to present themselves as their true self, to be honest, and open. Many men feel more comfortable sharing and opening up in a non-coed environment. Throughout group therapy, the most beneficial results are achieved from the ability to open up and truly share themselves and their struggles, with the other members of the group. This vulnerability can also be empowering as men are often revealing these deep-seeded issues for the first time.

Focus

While the primary focus in rehabilitation is sobriety, unnecessary distractions in a group such as; physical appearance, verbiage or political correctness, can sometimes offend or portray oneself unfavorably to the opposite sex. These seemingly little nuances are often times detrimental to treatment and can prevent individuals early in recovery from the honest participation that is necessary during self-reflection, which leads to a productive group therapy experience.

Different Needs

Men and women can handle addiction differently, both on a physical and psychological basis. Both men and women develop dependency similarly, the way the body and mind react to it are completely different. Women can experience addiction in a multifaceted way that is often closely tied to violence and abuse, risky sexual behavior and/or unwanted pregnancy. Men experience some of these same associations as well, but when asked, men often cite employment and legal concerns as reasons for seeking treatment while women typically present health and family issues. In most cases the addiction can be the same, however, the treatment and recovery for males and females are often very different. The nature of treatment programs are often similar (therapy, group, 12-step program, etc.), gender-specific centers usually differentiate in topics discussed associated with concerns. mental health, physical well-being and during group sessions.

In group therapy, for example, women often discuss issues such as unhealthy intimate relationships, eating disorders, parenting and child custody, physical health, appearance, hygiene and familial issues. Men’s issues tend to gravitate toward father and son relationships, anger, aggression, feelings of isolation, sexual issues or dysfunction, and career-related concerns. This has shown that separating the two groups by sex not only leads to more impactful dialogue but also a relative ease to opening up for men who often have difficulty showing “weakness” around women.

At Prescott House, we recognize the differing needs for both men and women and are dedicated to cater our program, to suit the needs of men and men’s issues. By separating the sexes, our staff can better serve individuals and give them the best chance for long-term success.

12-Step Program Emphasis

Embracing the principles of 12-Step programs, Prescott House successfully treats alcoholism, prescription medication, opiates; and other drug addictions, PTSD, codependency, sexual addiction, adult children of alcoholics, self-esteem issues, severe entitlement issues, relapse prevention, depression, Gambling Addiction and Dual-Diagnosis including: depression, ADD, ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder and Anxiety.

Reintegrating Healthy Men Back into Society

Individuals finish the residential portion of treatment and are asked to research appropriate living situations here in town with roommates from “The House”. Once approved by staff, individuals will then become an outpatient client and return for a men’s groups four days out of the week, while also securing a full-time job or educational opportunity at one of our three local colleges.

This process has proven to be very effective as it keeps the individual accountable to a group and their therapist, who have all been supportive throughout the entire treatment process. This trust and knowledge of each man can prevent the possibility of relapse as this support group is very aware of the signs of personal recovery sabotage.
