Dangers of Synthetic Cannabis
As Marijuana, or, cannabis, became popular over time, the creation of a synthetic alternative that would create the same effects became almost inevitable. This “synthetic marijuana” began to reach the mainstream in the early 2000s and is more dangerous than first imagined. Commonly known as Spice, K2, and hundreds of other names with which it is marketed under, this form of drug is actually extremely different from natural cannabis-marijuana. Synthetic Cannabis is actually chemical based with no positive consumption and health benefits. In fact, many packages of the drug are marketed as being made of ingredients that are natural but the synthetic version has been found to differ from ingredients listed. For this reason, it is dangerous and toxic when abused.
What is it?
These strains of synthetic cannabis contain heavy amounts of powerful and unnatural chemicals that have been found to cause severe and serious life threatening health effects. Because of the recent emergence of this substance, there have not been enough studies to predict the long-term effects of use. The synthetic material used, or cannabimimetics, are toxic for the body. Simply put, the effects of synthetic cannabis on the body are unpredictable as often times, a user just does not know what it is going to do to them or how the body will react to ingestion of synthetic material.
Why is it dangerous?
The synthetic material used in the creation of this drug has been shown to be addictive. There are reported cases where users are linked to severe health problems and in many unfortunate cases, death. In the case of synthetic cannabis, the dangers are rather frightening as its use has also been linked to heart and respiratory failure.
Dangerous and common symptoms associated with synthetic cannabis are:
- An increase in heartbeat and blood pressure. Fast and racing heartbeat along with a much higher blood pressure is an extremely dangerous side effect of the drug.
- Agitation and anxiety at high levels that can trigger panic attacks
- Intense and uncontrollable muscle spasms and tremors
- Suicidal tendencies including, but not limited to harmful thoughts, severe depression, and harmful self-inflicted injuries
- Severe hallucinations
- Psychotic episodes
- Heart attacks
Synthetic cannabis has since been deemed a risk to public’s health and safety by poison control centers and federal, state, and local government officials. This new drug movement should not be taken lightly as addiction to synthetic substances are unpredictable. The exposure gained for synthetic cannabis and abuse of this synthetic drug that are not heavily regulated is increasing by the minute.
